Turkey Day in Albania! November 23, 2007

Filed under: Day by Day — jwheelis @ 4:30 pm

Well it is just an ordinary day to all other here in Albania, but to us the celebrated and coveted day of feasting for THANKSGIVING! We gathered with about 25 people in the Upper Room at the Dabney’s home for a day of turkey (yes, we do have those here and no, we don’t have to kill them and pluck them), ham, potatoes, stuffing, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole (Amy, the team was all VERY thankful for the Durkee’s onions… thank you!) and more! We went around the table and shared what we were thankful for this year- God’s grace is certainly the biggest factor in all of our thanksgivings.

So the Wheelis family, what are we thankful for this year? Well… it must be the precious prize we have in our daughter and celebrating her first Thanksgiving! It was THREE years ago this month, that we first submitted our paperwork to America World Adoption Agency to start the process which led us to her! WOW!

Blessings to you and yours!

NO WATER! November 19, 2007

Filed under: Day by Day — jwheelis @ 8:29 pm

Starting today at 6pm the water for the whole city of Tirana will be shut off for a period of (hopefully) 24 hours. There are major repairs begin done to the water supply line. The water is supposed to be turned back on Tuesday morning… how much this will really be true remains to be seen. We are again thanking God that we have a large reservoir tank for water. It fills up when the water is on and we have a steady supply throughout the day (well, when the power is running). Those who do not have tanks throughout the city will truly be without water as long as the repairs are being made. Let’s pray that it does not last more than the scheduled 24 hours!

Greetings again…. November 11, 2007

So friends, it has been a while since I have seen you. I am not sure even if I am talking to those of you who read or simply the words on the page. For the expressions of my thoughts as printed on the page are friends in and of themselves. Ah… writing does give such a release to the soul. It has been a long 4 months of not really writing. A harder time for me as we are adjusting to being a family of 5 and remembering all that goes with having an 18 month old at home. The summer was a wonderful time but I can honestly say the silence in my home that accompanied the start of school was a welcome sound. So… many things have come and gone and new thoughts, ideas, happenings and works of God are keeping me busy. I am grateful to have a fresh page and working computer to get it all down. Stay tuned for the adventure….

House helper and language learning May 11, 2007

Filed under: Day by Day, Language learning — jwheelis @ 4:52 pm

This week we hired a “house helper”. Linda (pronounced “LEEN-DA”) has been the house helper for our friends Melodye and Peter Bowers for ( we think- based on our limited language) for six years. The Bowers have just left for some time in the States and we were able to hire Linda to come to our house during the time they are away as a trial run for having someone in our home to help with some of the cleaning. She also keeps Jadyn during these times while we are going to language lessons.

But Linda speaks only Albanian.

So we are having some interesting conversations to say the least. Sometimes we are able to complete the thought and sometimes we just have to give up. I was able to explain what I was looking for with Melodye translating for our first meeting. Since then we have been on our own! The night before she came for the first time, I was dreaming about all the things I needed to say to her in Shqip (Albanian). After we had a short conversation the first morning, it took me a half hour to realize that she was trying to tell me the dog was crying. We had put him in a back room while she is here- most Albanians are afraid of dogs.

We have language lessons on the days that Linda is here. When we arrive home, she gives us a full report and shows us everything she has done as well as tell us how Jadyn has done and what she ate, etc… Some we understand and some we do not. She is incredibly patient as we struggle to understand all that she says. We have reached a stage where we understand a lot of what is said to us, especially with a little help negotiating meaning. But we still speak a the level of a toddler. :-)

Linda mops floors (this is a major task since the whole first floor is all tile), washes dishes, and cleans bathrooms. These are the main things I have asked her to focus on while Jadyn is down for her nap. When Jadyn awakes, Linda feeds her lunch and plays with her while trying as she is able to clean. She did all the downstairs windows on Monday while watching Jadyn. They have not been that clean since we moved in. :-)

It is amazing how having a house helper makes you more aware of your own mess. I really want to clean up for her so she can clean the things that are really dirty and not just my clutter. It is also making me put a few systems in place for the boys so they have a place for all their things (backpacks, folders, homework, lunch boxes, water bottles). It is also making a HUGE difference for me since the dirt level here is about 5x higher than in the States. Please THANK GOD today for Linda and pray that we will have future opportunities to minister to her as well!

The 10 Cent Park April 13, 2007

Filed under: Crazy Kids, Day by Day — jwheelis @ 12:02 pm

We went to a park on Thursday. We have all been going a little stir crazy at home! Now I know that sounds really simple. But here in Albania, parks are pretty scarce. We had to walk a mile to get to this one. So… I load up Jadyn in the stroller and head out with Robert and the boys. This is our first time to visit this park- we have seen it on our way home from church. When we walked in we were approached by a woman who gave us tickets and ask for 40 lek (about 40 cents). So this park costs money! Interesting! The park is surrounded by hedges and fences so it is nice that you feel enclosed and safe. The boys had a great time sliding down the huge 10 foot pole. Never mind that the whole thing swayed a little and would never have passed US codes for a park. Robert and I stood ready to catch someone at any moment. But there were nice places of grass and shade, benches and tables and a little area to play soccer for the boys. All in all it was a great outing…. until we were locked in at the end. The attendant went to lunch. I felt a little less stupid when there were two other Albanian families trying to get out also…. ?!@#$%^&*?! How is this supposed to work? Finally another woman who was running a concession stand down the street came to let us out. Okay, note to self, watch the lunch hour at the park. Either bring enough food to stay or get out early!

A new airport terminal and technology April 2, 2007

Filed under: Day by Day — jwheelis @ 3:44 pm

We returned to Albania in the dead of night. Our plane arrived in Tirana at 12:30am local time. It took an hour to get our 13 bags plus carry ons and all the kids (wide awake I might add) through customs and into the arms of dear friends waiting at the gate! Albania has opened a new terminal at the airport since we left. Covered parking, a restaurant and all the works. Added bonus, there is a now full time job for a man who has to show everyone who comes to the airport how to push the button to get your stamped parking ticket and how to insert that ticket into the slot after you have paid your fees when you leave. The line is long as Albanians who have never seen such a thing wait to get in and out of the airport! Have you ever thought about that? How did we all learn to do that?! Who taught us to push the button at the airport to get the ticket and make the gate go up? Technology…. it is coming to Albania!
